Gophers Overtake the Tigers

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Gophers hit the road to compete against Trinity Washington. The Gophers swept the Tigers 3-0, dominating the match-up.
Kanay Parham gets swinging early with two consecutive kills in the first set. Gophers take the first three points with a kill by Liv DeBiasio. Goucher gains a few points off Trinity errors before Lucille Hendricks has a service ace. Alex Dzhygit scores her first kill, followed by a service ace for Athena Savick. Alex Jordan assists AaShyah De Vries with a successful spike, putting the Gophers at 12-5. Four kills from Hendricks, a kill from Dzhygit, and a service ace by Sofia Ortiz led the Gophers on a 12-point run to finish out the set.
The Gophers start the set with a service ace by Ortiz. Tigers come out more aggressively in the second set with a few early points. A five-point run featuring two service aces from Kelsi Hockaday pushes the Gophers ahead 9-6. Parham scores a kill before DeBiasio and Maria Basantes add scores to the Gopher tally. Ortiz assists Hockaday in a Gopher spike. De Vries slams a kill for Goucher from a set from Alex Jordan, pushing the Gophers 20-11. Trinity puts up a fight with a few points in the latter half of the set, but Goucher maintains their lead, taking the set 25-14.
The Tigers start the set 4-1. Goucher begins to strike back with two consecutive kills from Basantes, followed by a spike from Hockaday. Trinity comes behind by one point, 8-9. Gophers keep hitting the mark with two back-to-back kills from Parham and Hendricks. Gophers keep the Tigers at bay, going on a five-point run to close out the set. Goucher finishes with two more kills from Basantes, a kill from De Vries, and two service aces from Hockaday.
Hendricks was the leading scorer with seven kills. She was followed by Basantes with six. Ortiz led in assists with 16, and she led in service aces with six.
The Gophers return to action on October 25th, where they will be competing in a tri-match hosted by Centenary University.
