Gophers Win Second Game At Home

BALTIMORE, MD.- Goucher hosted Washington Adventist University in a non-conference match-up. The Gophers win 3-1 against the Shock.
Gophers take an early lead in the first set. An eight-point scoring run propels the Gophers' lead. Two consecutive kills by Alex Dzhygit push the score to 12-2 in the Gophers' favor. Washington Adventist takes the point back with a kill from the outside hitter. First year, Kelsi Hockaday fights back with a kill. Lucille Hendricks and Sofia Ortiz's attacks add to the Gopher tally, giving them the lead 18-5. Washington Adventist takes back the point and goes for the kill, but is shut down by a block from Liv DeBiasio and AaShyah De Vries. Goucher gains a few points from the Shock's errors, making the score 24-11. Washington Adventist's serve error is the final point Goucher needs to win the set.
The Shock start the set with a four-score run. Goucher takes back the point with kills by Hendricks and Dzhygit, helping tie the score 4-4. Alex Jordan serves as an ace, pushing the Gophers into the lead. The Shock go on a scoring run, taking back the lead. Imani Ward responds with a kill, pushing the Gophers in the lead 14-13. Goucher maintains their lead with consecutive spikes from DeBiasio and Hockaday, 16-14. Four more points are scored by Washington Adventist, bringing the score to a tie at 18-18. After a competitive back-and-forth near the end of the set, the Shock win the set 25-22.
Washington Adventist starts the scoring with a kill. Goucher responds with a five-point scoring run. Ward and De Vries add kills to the Gopher tally. Ortiz has two service aces followed by a spike from DeBiasio, pushing the score to 12-4. The Shock added a few points to the scoreboard, trying to catch up to Goucher. Two consecutive kills from Hendricks and DeBiasio put a stop to the Shocks' scoring run. The Gophers maintain their lead, winning the set 25-8.
Going into the fourth set, Goucher was up 2-1 in sets. The Shock begins the scoring with two kills. Goucher begins their five-point scoring run off an error from Washington Adventist. A service ace from Athena Savick keeps the scoring run alive. A spike from Dzhygit pushes the Gopher tally 7-4. Goucher fends off the Shock with kills from De Vries, DeBiasio, and Hendricks. Washington Adventist takes back the point, bringing the score to 11-14. Goucher maintains a dominant lead throughout the set. Gophers close out the set with three consecutive kills from Ortiz, Ward, and DeBiasio, winning 25-14.
The Gophers had 39 kills throughout the game. Dzhygit led in kills with 11, followed closely by Hendricks, who had nine. Savick led the team in digs with 18 of the 65. Hendricks had the second most digs with 13. There were 10 service aces, with Jordan and Hendricks tying with three each.
The Gophers will return to action on Saturday, September 13. They will be hosting a tri-match in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.
