Goucher Sweeps Centenary (NJ) in Second Game of the Day

BALTIMORE, MD.- Goucher wins the second game of the day, 3-0, against the Visiting Cyclones of Centenary University. Two starting dominant sets led to a close third but the Gophers came out victorious.
Athena Savick starts the set with a service ace, setting the pace for the Gophers. Gophers take an early 5-1 lead, including two service aces from Alex Jordan. The Cyclones fight back, shortening the Gopher lead 6-5. Kills from Alex Dzhygit and Liv DeBiasio keep the Gophers ahead. Centenary fights back, adding two points to their tally, putting them only one point behind Goucher. Sofia Ortiz serves two consecutive aces followed by a Goucher error, giving Wilson control of the ball. They do not get very far before DeBiasio and Lucille Hendricks add two more kills to the scoreboard for Goucher. At this point, Goucher has the lead 15-9 before the Cyclones chip away at their lead. Imani Ward puts up two more points for Goucher with her successful attacks. A kill from Henricks secures the Gopher lead, finishing the set 25-18.
Centenary starts the set aggressively, but their momentum is stopped by a service ace from DeBiasio and a kill from Ward. An error from the Cyclones leads to a tied score of 4-4. Both teams go back and forth until AaShyah De Vries puts two spikes on the board for the Gophers. An error by Goucher leads to a score by Centenary. A bad set by the Cyclones gives the Gophers an opening to go on a six-point scoring run, kept alive by a big block from De Vries, two service aces from Hendricks, and a kill by Dzhygit 14-7. The Cyclones fight back, adding three more points to the scoreboard. Goucher flips the momentum with successful attacks by Ward and DeBiasio, 18-10. A few more errors by Centenary give Goucher the opening they need to take the set 25-17.
Going into the last set, both teams start competitively. Goucher gets an early three-point lead before a kill from the Cyclones leads to them tying the set 4-4 and then taking control 7-4. Centenary fights back at the Gopher lead with three consecutive kills, bringing the score to 11-6. Three errors from the Cyclones lead to a spike by Hockaday. Hendricks and DeBiasio keep adding to the Gopher tally with successful attacks. Centenary has a final four-point run push. Two errors and kills by Ortiz and Hockaday seal the deal for the Gophers, taking the set 25-23.
The Gophers had 28 kills, with Hendricks and DeBiasio with six each. They were followed closely by War with five. Otiz led in assists with eight, and Jordan completed seven. Gophers had 73 digs through the contest with Hendricks leading with 19 and Savick haveing 14 digs.
The Gophers will return to action on September 17th at Arcadia. The contest will begin at 7 pm.
